Diagnosing Social Anxiety Disorder:
Why It's a BAD Idea
I believe that diagnosing Social Anxiety
Disorder is a bad idea. This
is because the word “disorder” implies
that there is something irreparably wrong with you –
which, if you read
my article What Is Social Anxiety?, you'll
realize there definitely is
The last thing you need is the word
“disorder” lurking in your mind, making you think you're broken and can
be fixed, when quite simply, that just isn't the case.
You may be wanting a diagnosis of Social
Anxiety Disorder for peace of mind – so that you can be absolutely sure
that social anxiety is what you are suffering from.
If you find
yourself asking the question “do I have social anxiety?”, feel
out my definitive guide to the Social Anxiety Disorder Symptoms.
If you recognize that the symptoms
described in that article happen to you during social situations, you
can be sure enough that it is social anxiety you are suffering from. No
further evidence is required.
Do you insist on diagnosing Social
Anxiety Disorder in yourself...
Then obviously only a qualified professional
can do that for you. Contact your local
doctor for more information. My
last message to you on the topic of diagnosis is this: It simply is not
required for you to begin overcoming social anxiety.
