Many people base their lives around
preventing social anxiety from happening. This leads to a lot of missed
social opportunities that would be enjoyable experiences, even though
they'd be anxiety 'provoking'.
In this article, I'll show you an
attitude for coping with social anxiety, that will
prevent it from denying you of a social life.
The Attitude: Ultimately, Anxiety is
Anxiety's sole purpose is to prepare your
body for self defence during times of threat. The symptoms of it make
this completely obvious.
Since anxiety's reason for happening is
evidently to benefit you, it is vital for you to recognize that however
frightening anxiety can feel, it cannot possibly hurt you.
The attitude that I want you to build into
a part of your day-to-day mindset is that social anxiety cannot hurt
you, so you shouldn't try to avoid it.
To make this
clear: There is no
need to avoid doing social things, just because anxiety will occur –
because anxiety is harmless. That's the 'golden mindset' for coping
with social anxiety.
telling yourself that it is harmless,
your ability at coping with social anxiety will increase significantly.
This is because coping with any problem depends more on your mindset
towards it than anything else.
With the correct mindset, it is amazing
what a human being can withstand. Attitude is everything.
For years I maintained a functional social
life, despite my high levels of social anxiety. The simple mindset
revealed above was instrumental in allowing me to
keep my head above water, socially speaking.
Before you fully overcome social anxiety
(this takes time), it's vital that you don't allow it to prevent you
from having at least something that resembles a social life...
no need for SA to deny you of life's pleasures, because at the end of
the day, it is simply a harmless case of your brain triggering an
evolutionary survival mechanism at inappropriate times.
